Why Industrial Farming Cannot Work in Fragile Mountain Regions

The Himalayan landscape is simply not suited to large-scale mechanization or monoculture. Farms average ~1 hectare per household[30], usually split into many tiny, steep terraces. In practice, this means:

·         Terracing and machinery: Big tractors and irrigation pivots just don’t fit on narrow, uneven terraces. A survey even found that larger farms in the hills less often adopt machinery, specifically because fragmented terraces make it hard to maneuver equipment[31]. Heavy ploughs would compact soil and risk slippage on slopes.

·         Erosion risk: Tilling or watering intensively would wash away the thin mountain topsoil. Unlike flat plains, Himalayan soils are shallow and sit on bedrock; research shows that over-intensive farming accelerates erosion and landslides. Traditional farming avoids leaving fields bare.

·         Logistics: Remote locations lack roads for heavy trucks or power lines. Transporting fuel, fertilizers and crops on foot and mule trains is the norm. Therefore, chemical-dependent industrial practices (which require regular resupply of inputs) are economically impossible.

In essence, “big agriculture” breaks the delicate ecological balance here. Only scaled models built on cooperation and local adaptation (like cooperatives using hand-tools or portable mills) are viable in this terrain[30][31].
