The Role of Biodiversity in Himalayan Agriculture

Biodiversity is integral to mountain farming resilience. Heirloom crops, wild relatives and mixed-species farming all buffer against shocks. A striking example is the Himalayan black pea: genetic sequencing showed it is distinct from any commercial pea, reflecting “thousands of years” of local selection[28]. Crucially, this pea performed far better than imported varieties under harsh conditions – it survived drought stress and poorer soils, and was “easier and less water-intensive to grow”[29]. Other benefits of diversity include:

·         Pest control: Intercropping (e.g. planting millet alongside vegetables) and maintaining forest patches supports natural predators. Birds and predatory insects help keep pests down without chemicals.

·         Nutritional safety net: A greater variety of crops (millets, legumes, tubers, herbs) means more nutrition. As the Stanford study found, the black peas alone are richer in protein and minerals than common substitutes[2] – illustrating that protecting native crops can improve diets.

·         Cultural and genetic heritage: Seed exchange networks and community seed banks ensure that rare crops (like finger millet or local rice strains) are not lost. These genetic resources may hold traits (disease resistance, drought tolerance) that large agribusiness seeds lack.
