From Orchard to Oil: The Story of Apricot Kernel Oil

The Himalayas are home to wild and cultivated apricot orchards. Each spring, bees and butterflies pollinate the fragrant blossoms. By summer’s end, bright orange fruits hang heavy on branches. The seed inside each pit (apricot kernel) holds up to 50% oil by weight[17]. Our process:

·         Harvest: Locals pick fruits by hand. The fleshy apricots are partially pressed into value-added jam or dried for snacks. Then the hard pits are cracked to extract the white kernels.

·         Cold-pressing: Kernels are cold-pressed within hours (we never use solvents). This yields a light, golden oil with a mild nutty aroma. Biochemically, apricot kernel oil is very rich in monounsaturated (oleic) and polyunsaturated (linoleic) fats[18]. These help control inflammation and reduce heart disease risk. The oil also contains vitamin E and natural antioxidants from the husk.

·         Cultural note: Traditionally, Himalayan villagers used apricot oil for skin nourishment and cooking. By commercializing it, we give value to a “no-waste” crop: up to a third of the fruit’s biomass (the kernel) is utilized, aligning with our sustainability goals[19].

Finally, each bottle of apricot kernel oil carries the essence of high-altitude fruit: its subtle flavor and health virtues reflect the clean mountain air, mineral-rich soils and time-honored heritage of Himalayan orchards.
